BIOGRAPHY

Murray Perahia – Sparkling, brilliant and penetrating

Murray Perahia was born in 1947 in New York, as a descendant of Spanish Sephardic Jews who had migrated via Greece to the United States. His father was an inveterate lover of opera. He transmitted his passion to his four-year old son: “When he became aware of my interest for opera, and my ability to sing all arias I had heard the previous evening, he sent me to music lessons.” Eventually the choice fell on the piano.  Perahia maintains that it was not his own conscious decision to become a musician. It simply happened.Perahia studied under Mieczysław Horszowski and Rudolf Serkin. He also became a friend of Vladimir Horowitz. His insights and personality were a source of inspiration.
