Blind born pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii replaces Nelson Freire

We regret to inform you that pianist Nelson Freire has broken a shoulder due to a fall and has been in surgery last week. It appears that he will not be able to perform in the coming three or four months. Therefore Nelson Freire will not be present to give his 75th birthday recital at December 15 in our Masterpianists series. However we can inform you that he will be replaced by Nobu Tsujii who will make his debut in the series.

The 31-year-old Japanese pianist NOBUYUKI (“Nobu”) TSUJII won the First Prize in 2009 at the famous Van Cliburn Competition in the US. His star has since risen internationally. Nobu replaced Murray Perahia in Carnegie Hall with a lot of praise from the press and public and has been successful in many important halls. He has performed with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy and Valery Gergiev and regularly tours Asia and the US. In the 2018-2019 season Nobu gave recitals in the Philharmonie in Berlin and the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, among others. For this special occasion Nobuyuki Tsujii will perform this great and demanding program, entirely Chopin.

“Tsujii’s interpretation was particularly convincing due to his brilliant musicality and a stupendous sense of style that achieved almost perfect balance and tonal transparency.”
