BIOGRAPHY

Nelson Freire – Finesse and pure musical aristocracy

In 2005, when no longer in his youth, the Brasilian Nelson Freire made his debut in the Meesterpianisten series. In 2007 he saved the twentieth anniversary concert, when Martha Argerich, with whom he would perform, had to cancel on the day of the concert. According to Argerich, Freire is the world’s most gifted pianist. Freire is a pianist for the connoisseurs: the aristocrat among the pianists: civilized, with a great sense of style, always subservient to his music—a real poet. His performances of the music of Brahms, Schumann, Liszt and Chopin are internationally acclaimed. NRC Handelsblad described it once in the following terms: “No note is played simply for effect, and every phrase is covered with a quiet sphere of devotion and depth. Listening to Freire, one hears in his touch something of the lethargic warmth, sultry sensuality and relativizing melancholy of such South-American authors as Marquez.”
