BIOGRAPHY

Severin von Eckhardstein – Colourful, evocative and refined

Since the German master pianist Severin von Eckardstein won the Queen Elisabeth Concours in 2003 he is a popular and much sought-after guest in the Meesterpianisten series. He is a master pianist who is completely subservient to the music and dislikes all outward show. He is refined, poetic, at times dreamy, and yet very exact. “It may seem that I am very timid, but on the inside I burst with energy. My piano allows me to translate my emotions and thoughts.” He played his most recent recital in the series in January 2017, and this proved to be a musical triumph. Trouw had this headline: “Tonal beauty, expression and narrative talent of a piano genius”. The critic continued: “Von Eckardstein showed his great skill in his absolute technical mastery of the piano music. At the same time, he gave so much priority to the spiritual nature and content of the music that one hardly noticed the sportive and professional aspects. The material side disappeared in the Main Hall; the grand piano was exalted to a medium that could make the pure musical thoughts audible and call forth images.”
