BIOGRAFIE

Sublime freedom and masterful control

Grigory Sokolov is without doubt one of the most impressive living pianists. Every season the Russian grandmaster is a guest in the series. Everything he touches turns into gold. If anyone has a clear idea of how music should be performed, it is Grigory Sokolov. He plays music with so much persuasiveness that it is self-evident and yet sounds like new. Sokolov lives in his own world. He puts his own stamp on the music without doing injustice to the composer, and he seems to live on a different planet from where he has a broader view than we, ordinary mortals, have. His play is a quest for the essence, for deeper layers. Under his hands, every well-known piece becomes a new discovery. Sokolov is superior, but never arrogant; he stands above everything else, but, above all, stands up to serve the music.
